Founded by Dr. Alex Boyd,
the director of the Newark (New Jersey) Public Library, the BCALA Awards
recognize outstanding work by African American authors. Winners receive
the BCALA Medallion and an honorarium of $500. In addition, certificates
are given to the authors given Honor, First Novel, and Outstanding Contribution
to Publishing awards. Winners are announced during the American Library
Association's Midwinter Meeting, and the awards themselves are presented
at the ALA Annual Conference.
